The company on June 10 initiated a voluntary recall of its branded rawhide products which included: American Beefhide, Digest-eeze, and Healthy Hide (including Healthy Hide – Good -n- Fun and Healthy Hide – Good -n- Fit).

United Pet Group ordered the recall after it learned that some of its manufacturing facilities in Mexico, Colombia and Brazil were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid to make the rawhide chews.

The compound is approved for cleaning food processing equipment, but has not been approved in the U.S. as a processing aid for the production of rawhide dog chews.

Exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds through direct ingestion may cause the following symptoms in dogs: reduced appetite and gastric irritation, including diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian.

Affected products were distributed nationwide from United Pet Group’s Edwardsville, Illinois distribution facility and delivered to consumers through various retail establishments, including online outlets.

All products affected by the recall feature expiration dates ranging from 06/01/2019 to 5/31/2020 on the back of the package, with the exception of the Enzadent and Dentahex products, which are listed by UPC codes below and specific expiration dates outlined below:

We had ABSOLUTELY NO idea why our guy all of a sudden started having diarrhea and stomach issues. We spent many hours with his veterinary Doctor. NOW we know.
